You’ve probably heard a lot of buzz about LASIK from friends, family,
or coworkers who have benefitted from this vision enhancing technology.
At Vista Laser Vision in New York,
Dr. Mark Hornfeld specializes in treating vision ailments with LASIK surgery. Here are some
points that describe ideal candidates for a LASIK procedure:
Be Within the Proper Age Range: Although there is no specific age that is more or less ideal for LASIK,
patients should be at least over eighteen years old. This is due to safety
precautions and concerns that persons younger may not be stable enough
in terms of general health. Older patients who are beginning to develop
cataracts will most likely be ineligible for the procedure.
Have Stable Vision: The ideal LASIK candidate has had only minor degradation in his or her
vision over the last several years. If your vision has gotten considerably
worse in recent years, you may not be the best candidate for LASIK as
your vision may still be changing. Your prescription should have remained
the same for at least two years if you are to undergo LASIK surgery.
Not be Pregnant: If you are trying to get pregnant, you need to discuss the timing of your
possible pregnancy and surgery with your Vista Laser Vision surgeon. Hormonal
changes and temporary imbalances during pregnancy as well as nursing can
alter your vision and prevent you from achieving ideal results.
Have Healthy Corneas: Your corneas need to be able to sustain the
LASIK procedure, which will require a corneal flap to be cut. If the cornea is not thick
enough to be cut into successfully, the surgeon may not be able to create
a flap and will have to find alternative methods for treating your condition.
