What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a serious eye disease that is the leading cause of blindness in people older than 55. In a healthy eye, the light enters through the cornea and the retina sends the images to the brain through the optic nerve. In a person with AMD, the photoreceptors in the retina are damaged, which leads to distorted central vision or blindness.
