LASIK surgery can permanently improve your vision. Meeting with your
eye doctor in New York for a consultation prior to your surgery gives you an opportunity
to ask questions and ensure that you fully understand the procedure prior
to proceeding. Preparing ahead of time will help you know what to expect,
and allow you to get the most out of your surgery.
Is LASIK surgery permanent?
The laser used in LASIK surgery permanently reshapes your cornea to correct
your vision. Your vision will be permanently corrected, but the extent
to which your vision is improved may vary. If your vision is not completely
corrected with your first
corrective eye surgery, your eye doctor can perform an enhancement to further correct your vision.
Generally, only a very small amount of patients will need this enhancement.
Is LASIK surgery safe?
There are fewer risks associated with LASIK than there are with long-term
contact lens wear. Every aspect of the LASIK procedure—from the
use of the equipment to the training of the eye doctors who use it—is
strictly and routinely regulated. The most serious side effect of LASIK
surgery is the risk of a minor infection, but this is very rare. Other
side effects of the surgery are temporary, and include poor night vision,
seeing halos around images, and a sensitivity to light glare.
How is the surgery performed?
LASIK surgery is performed with a very precise laser called a microkeratome
or femtosecond laser. This laser will create a thin flap in your cornea
that allows your eye doctor to reshape it. After the cornea is reshaped,
your eye doctor will replace the flap so your eye can heal. The procedure
is performed using local anesthesia; your eye doctor will numb your eyes
with special eye drops. The procedure only lasts around 10 minutes.
