How Crystalens and Accommodating IOLs Compare to Multifocal IOLs

Nearly 22 million Americans over the age of 40 suffer from cataracts , according to the American Association of Ophthalmology. If you require cataract surgery , there is good news: New advances in IOLs (intraocular lenses) can help you to see with perfect clarity again. Advanced technology IOLs (artificial lenses implanted in the eye) have two separate methods: one called accommodation, and the other called multifocal. Currently, Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating IOL. How does Crystalens compare to multifocal IOLs? Let’s take a look:

  • Accommodating IOLs such as Crystalens improves eyesight by shifting with eye movement. In all IOL procedures, after the eye’s natural lens is removed, an artificial lens is implanted in its place. A multifocal IOL’s space is divided into zones. The brain learns to “look” through the correct zone for near, intermediate, and far distances. However, an accommodating IOL, made up of just one focusing zone, shifts position with eye muscle action and movement, which enables focus at multiple distances.
  • Accommodating IOLs provide better contrast sensitivity. An extremely important measure of good vision, contrast sensitivity is your ability to distinguish between objects and their backgrounds. In low-light settings, such as driving at night or in fog, contrast sensitivity is essential.
  • Accommodating IOLs cause fewer visual side effects than multifocal IOLs. Multifocal IOLs have been known to produce unpleasant side effects, such as glare, halos, and other night vision problems. Many patients also report crisper long-distance vision with accommodating IOLs like Crystalens.
